About the 'base=' directive. As you state, the absence of any 'base=' statement will prevent mairix from launching:
"No folder_base/MAIRIX_FOLDER_BASE set"

An empty value for base will not so prevent launch, but if there are no mh or mbox folders defined it will then stop in its tracks:
"No [mh_]folders/mboxen/MAIRIX_[MH_]FOLDERS set"

However, an empty (or fictitious) base value _is_ used to compose folder paths that are searched for, and, if not found, vigorously complained about.

Problem: I have no idea how the directories on my IMAP server are named. I seem to recall that dovecot has all sorts of ways of tagging, so to speak, folders with various roles. I have a note into my sysadmin for clarification if he has any!

Thanks!
