Folks,
I have already gotten responses from nearly 2/3rds of the MAISA membership!
Those of you who have not responded, please do so. We are on the verge of
having a very clear picture of how the teams of MAISA vary and this could be of
real value as we look to improving our racing.
I have been very pleased with the response that has been far better than I
got from the entire membership of the ICSA when we did a similar study some
years ago. It has been interesting when two people responded from the same
school, and particularly so when one was the advisor/coach and the other was a
student! They don't always agree!
These schools have yet to respond:
NYM
WAC
PRN
WEB
DEL
AU
QU
GWU
HMT
RIT
PSU
RMC
VIL
LOY
SKD
UNN
>From the response thus far it is clear that there is a great deal of
interest in what this study may tell us. So, those of you who haven't
responded,
please do so.
One comment: When we did the ICSA study and related it back to the
historical record of how and who did what at the nationals (coed dinghies) it
was
clear that there were seven key elements that were vital to making it to the
big
dance. Six of those are the items in this survey. The seventh was that a team
had to be from one of the most competitive conferences in the ICSA. Clearly,
since we are all in MAISA, we all have one of those key elements. What it
came down to was a school could lack one element and it could be soft in two,
but to be seriously lacking in three meant that a team could forget about the
top spots.
In a similar manner, how highly teams score in these elements relates
directly to how good a team's chances are of getting to the nationals. The
point of
all this is not to categorize teams but to note their differences and let
that knowledge guide us toward better events and better schedules that will
make the collegiate sailing experience a positive for all of our teams, not
just
those at the top. After all, we all can't be the top or one of the top teams.
Thanks again for the cooperation and I'll get the results out to you as soon
as we have a 90% or better return.
Dan
