All,

I am less concerned about the resolution of a one year problem with Navy's
conflict, and more interested in trying to help MAISA women's teams have a
qualification process that accomplishes two ends:

 1. Identifies the teams best able to represent MAISA at nationals.
 2. Helps teams prepare to qualify out of semi-final round.

I think the new women's nationals semi-final format gives up an opportunity to
improve our selection system. We could certainly easily move the event.
FYI--I AM NOT LOBBYING TO HOST as I do not think this is the best ultimate
solution; but just so everyone is aware, SMC now has 18 FJ's (2009) and 18
420's (2004). I have notified Ann Campbell of our intent to host all of our
regattas going forward using both fleets.

I look forward to brainstorming together to improve the game for women in our
district.

Enjoy,

Adam

The simplest "fix" is to keep the same date, but move the location. If we want
to improve the regatta in terms of selecting teams for nationals, I would
suggest that we move the event to a 420 Location- either KP, NYM, HWS or
Cornell. I would be happy to run the event here at HWS.

If we held the event here at HWS, all three Nationals qualifiers would be at
420 venues this year. NYM is hosting The Prosser and Cornell the America
Trophy. That would leave KP and HWS as possible location for Women's. I do
realize that would mean back to back years for the MAISA Women's at HWS, and
also the three championship events would be held in the North Region in the
spring. However, ODU is already hosting back to back Fall Women's in 2009 and
2010. Plus we are already traveling to the South Region for all the Fall
Championships- Sloops, Dinghy, Women's and Women's singlehanded. Neither of
this factors seem to create a hardship for anyone.

The other possibility which is consistent with what MAISA has done in the past
is to maintain the rotation and have the regatta return to the host of the
event two years ago- in this case SMC. We did this with the America Trophy
with GTN/ HWS in 2007 and the Prosser in 2009 GTN/ NA. Would this be the
fairest solution for MAISA? Maybe they will have a fleet of 420's by the spring?

I agree with Mike. I would like to see us figure out a better system than the
one we have. I don't think any of us believe we are using the best method to
prepare or select for the nationals (finals or semis).

All - I'd prefer to keep it on weekend 12 or move to weekend 10 or even better
create a formula to qualifiy for nationals and avoid the really bad 7 team
MAISA Women's Championships. I can predict that on both of those weekends
conditions on the Potomac will be crappy.

FYI. We're scheduled to host MAISA Women's and the Intrepid here at Navy on
the same weekend in '10. The Intrepid uses almost all of our resources, so we
were hoping to move MAISA Women's to either a different weekend or a different
location so that the event has the attention it deserves. Dan's comments re.
potential different weekends are below. I personally would prefer that we do
not do Women's on weeks 10, 11 or 13 since there are coed qualifiers on all of
those weekends and I know that many of us might use some of the same sailors in
those qualifiers.

What are your thoughts?

Ann & Ian,

I've attached my working copy of the MAISA Regional schedule as I understand it
to be at the moment. I've got the intersectional schedule up to date and the
schedule for the smaller teams pretty well nailed, at least for the spring.
I've highlighted the Women's Spring in Red at it present date on Week #12.

Regarding the options:

Week #13 is the week of the Semis. I don't think that would work.

Week #11 is America Week and that wouldn't be attractive. If the top teams are
counting on some of their best women for the America and the Semis, that kills
them.

Week #10 might be the best with only the President's Trophy at BU. How big is
this for the top women's teams?

Week #9 has the spring qualifiers, the Arrigan and the Dellenbaugh. Again, how
big is the Dellenbaugh for the top women's teams? This is also Easter this year.

Week #8 has the Duplin (same question of importance), the Zambecki and the
Admiral Moore. Since the Duplin is listed as "Promotional". would this be best
or is it too early in the year?

Week #7 is the Trux and Week #6 is the Navy Women's and from here it seems too
early.

I think we need feedback from the top women's teams to determine which weekend
offers the fewest or the least impactful competing regattas.

I suggest forwarding this info to the appropriate teams for comment.

Dan,

Is it easy to move the MAISA Spr women's for 2010 so Navy can still host? That
would be my preference rather than mess up the rotation which took some doing
to get it done last spring.
