REGATTA HIGHLIGHTS:
Saturday: It was a beautiful day in Annapolis, bright and sunny with
temperatures in the upper 70s. The only down side to the weather was that
the wind was not cooperating and we headed out in the morning only to wait
around for an hour and a half before coming back in for lunch. We finally
got off the dock again at 1230 and were able to set a course off the
Annapolis Naval Support Facility in a 4-5 knot easterly. Three races were
completed and a fourth was started and abandoned when the wind died again.
Sunday was a very different day, with rain, cooler temperatures and a 10-13
knot Southeasterly breeze and 3 foot waves. We set a course in the Severn
River right off the Robert Crown Center and ran five races before coming in
for a short lunch break. After lunch, the wind decreased to 5-10 knots and
three more races were completed before the wind died completely and racing
was called off for the day.
Thanks to Dina Kowalyshyn for serving as an on the water judge and to LT Ben
Herring and his team of midshipmen for running quality races in challenging
conditions.
Congratulations to Georgetown's Charlie Buckingham for winning the event and
to Chris Barnard, Max Lopez, Al Ravelo and Robert Vann for qualifying for
the Carl Van Duyne Trophy at USNA on October 9-10.
