Additions to Agenda

1. Pay raise for Conference Scheduler – Maxwell Plarr

2. Allowing all teams to compete at Spring Qualifiers – Scott Ikle

New Business

1. Discussion of the new no-show system – Commissioner Callahan asked for
feedback concerning the new “No-Show” penalty system adopted at the 2012
Annual Meeting. Two teams had received “No-Show” penalties and have been
reminded of the new penalties. It was agreed that the system would be
reviewed at the end of the season to see if the system works. There is some
concern about a few teams in each region who have either no-showed or
failed to sign up for events last semester. The Area Reps were encouraged
to reach out to these teams to offer guidance.

2. New registration process for MAISA individuals – Commissioner Callahan
reminded the Executive Committee that MAISA is only requiring that sailors
be registered online at www.collegesailing.info. The old MAISA Approved
Competitor Form is no longer required.

3. Purrington Award – Commissioner Callahan reminded the Executive
Committee that the Purrington Award is given each year to: " to the
graduating senior from MAISA each year who has made outstanding
contributions to college sailing through his/her efforts, not only by
competing, but in the promotion of the sport, by fostering sportsmanship
among teams, maintaining quality of competition, and contributing to the
overall performance of our conference. The recipient is not necessarily the
best sailor in MAISA but embodies the selfless spirit of true competition
and commitment to excellence in support of college sailing in our
conference.”

Nominations are due by April 6, 2012 and the winner will be announced April
14 at the America Trophy competitors meeting.

4. MAISA Annual Meeting host. St. John’s College has requested that they
be the “default” host of the MAISA Annual Meeting. Skip Kovacs from St.
John’s told the committee that St. John’s would be willing to host whenever
MAISA was in need of a host for the meeting. The Executive Committee
commended Skip for hosting a great meeting in 2012 and expressed their
support for St. John’s hosting the event provided no other MAISA members
offer to host.

5. Judges for Prosser Trophy – Bill Ward from St. Mary’s College informed
the Executive Committee that St. Mary’s has organized an experienced and
capable crew of Umpires for the Prosser Trophy April 7-8, 2012.

6. Team Race challenge – Commissioner Callahan asked for feedback from the
teams competing at the 2012 Team Race Challenge. Representatives from UVA,
COR, FRD and VU all agreed that KP ran a great event. This years Team Race
Challenge had more teams than in years past. All competitors agreed that
the regatta was better without teams that had already qualified for the
Prosser Trophy. Concern was expressed about the lack of umpires at the
Team Race Challenge and the fact that coaches were asked to umpire.
Commissioner
Callahan agreed that coaches should not be asked to umpire at the Team Race
Challenge and pledged to help organize umpires for the 2013 event. The
conversation then moved on to the fact that there are few opportunities for
teams outside the top 9 to compete in 3 on 3 team race events in the spring
season. K.C. Fullmer UVA, asked that the conference look into adding more 3
on 3 events in the spring.

Additions to Agenda

1. Pay Raise for MAISA Scheduler – Maxwell Plarr proposed that MAISA look
into increasing the salary for the MAISA Conference Scheduler due to the
amount of work required for the job. Commissioner Callahan agreed to work
with the Scheduler and the Treasurer to see if MAISA can offer more money.

2. Allowing all teams to compete in the Spring Qualifier – Scott Ikle
brought up the point that there are openings in some of the Spring
Qualifiers for the America Trophy and argued that teams that had already
qualified should be able to compete in the Qualifiers. Considerable
discussion ensued. There is a general disagreement within MAISA about
whether the Top Nine teams should be allowed to compete at these events. Ikle,
North Rep Morgan and Commissioner Callahan argued that if there are opening
in the events MAISA should allow all teams to participate. Dan Winters and
Joe Sullivan argued that the qualifiers are better when the top teams are
not involved because it allows the other teams the opportunity to win the
qualifier.

After considerable discussion Commissioner Callahan felt that the issue
needed to be tabled and brought up again on the next call.

The call ended at 9:35PM. The next call is scheduled for Tuesday April 17
@ 8:30PM
