Hello Dave, Well, let's assume that autoconf is right and the problem is more a per project issue. I have solved it for projects using gnulib (e.g. bison, cvs, diffutils etc), see: http://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/bug-autoconf/2007-10/msg00026.html
GNU make is not using gnulib or the old macros as far as I can see. There could be some old definitions in the m4 macros in /make/config. It could also be an Interix specific bug in autoconf and then you are right.
