I'm used to developing exclusively on my notebook, and I tend to
carry my whole installation with me when I'm switching notebooks.
So once something's installed, it never vanishes. (And I'm also
rsyncing the whole filesystem with an external drive regularly
since my old harddisk crashed last year...)
(And even when I'm installing other machines, I'm using the world
file of my notebook as a reference, and so YAML gets installed
during the installation process.)

Me too. It looks more like Configure than like an average Makefile.PL.
