>(P.S.: where is there a "flying contest" in the Iliad? Only in a recent CW
>review of Martin student Hillary Mackie's book Talking Trojan, where an
>overeager proofreader has falsely corrected the phrase "flyting contest"
>into "flying contest")

Is this fact or surmise? Another possibility is that the error was
introduced by the typesetter and that the proofreader or more likely
proofreaders plural failed to spot it. However, I don't deny that
proofreaders (alas!) do sometimes guess, and guess wrong.
