At the end of Book 8 in the Aeneid, Venus asks Vulcan to make a suit of armor
for Aeneas. One of the items of the armor is a shield depicting certain future
glories of Roman history. These include Romulus and Remus, the banishment of
Tarquin the Proud, the punishment of Cataline and the Battle of Actium.
Aeneas is grateful and proud to wear this armor although he does not know the
meanings of the evens shown on the shield. Are there any parallels elsewhere
in the epic which might illuminate this scene?
