As I already told you, this feature is only available in the svn trunk
version (and 1.5rc2, which will be released soon), because the required
feature ("fractional zoom") was introduced recently in OpenLayers. If
you upgrade to the current trunk version, you will have the desired
behaviour, as long as you do not use commercial base layers or WMS-C layers.
If you really want to tweak that by hand with 1.5rc1 (which I do not
recommend at all), have a look at http://jira.codehaus.org/browse/MAP-197
