Are you talking about the GDAL provider or using the GDAL library directly in PHP?
If you are talking about the provider, GDAL is encapsulated in the form of a FDO provider and that is further encapsulated as MapGuide's Feature Service API. MapGuide has no direct knowledge about GDAL.
