There is no need to also install PHP.
MapGuide has PHP installed anyway, you do not need the PHP viewer.

It makes things easier if you install MGOS and VS on the same machine, but it is not required.

If you use seperate machines, you have to copy over a few files from MGOS (the bin folder from the viewer and the webconfig.ini). You also need to ensure that the appropriate ports are open between the two machines (ports are listed in webconfig.ini).
