It is possible. since gdal is a dll. In my tests gdal1.7 works against mapguide, even if is not officially supported. All you have to do is compile gdal 1.7 against ecw sdk (or find an already compiled version). Obviously if you can afford it, it would probably be better for you to wait for mapguide 2.4 with gdal 1.9.
