We have a plaster sphere mounted in a box that is clearly for measuring
something, but we're not sure what.  We've put up some pictures and a
description on the web page above.  We decided to turn to this list to see
if anyone knows the answer to these questions:

Does this have anything to do with geography (e.g. is the meridian line the
Prime Meridian?), or is it related to something else entirely, such as
geometry or optics, given that the corners are marked with the words concave
and convex? 

When was it likely made?
