Adele: The Geography and Map Division, Library of Congress, holds a copy of this particular undated Francis Edwards catalog. Unfortunately, our copy does not include any annotations or accession stamp that might provide information on the date of publication. Perhaps others can assist with this added information: --------- Information from front cover: "Francis Edwards, Ltd. 83 High Street, Marylebone, London" [Title:] "Old / Maps / of / the / World" "New Series, Volume Three" --------- Ed Redmond Geography & Map Reference Specialist Library of Congress Washington, DC 20540 - 4650 [email protected] 202-707-8548 -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of [email protected] Sent: Wednesday, August 11, 2010 1:12 PM To: Discussion group for map history Subject: [MapHist] Francis Edwards Ltd This is a MapHist list message (when you hit 'reply' you're replying to the whole list) o + o + o + o + o + o + o + o + o + o + o + o + o + o + o + o + o + o + o + Dear Colleagues, I am trying to find out whether any library or collection has an archive devoted to the antiquarian bookseller firm Francis Edwards (founded 1855), now called Francis Edwards Ltd. I am particularly interested in one of their catalogues, which goes by two titles "Old Maps of the World" and "Ancient geography; a catalogue of atlases & maps of all parts of the world from XV century to present day." I have been able to obtain a copy at the NYPL, but have a host of questions relating to its actual date of publication (no date on catalogue itself, but said to be from 1929 or 1930 on WorldCAT) to the number of copies printed; its distribution -- esp. to Australia; the author of its anonymous preface; and to whom the firm might have sold one of the maps listed in the catalogue. I have contacted Greg Coombes, CEO of Francis Edwards. But all he can say is that "our association with the firm dates from 1982 by which time the FE archive had been dispersed, including the reference copies of old catalogues. I regret to report therefore that we are unable to assist you with your research." Can anyone help me with my research, or direct me to someone who can? Thanks and my best to you all, Adele Adele J.
