Dear Maphisters,

Obviously based on western models California occisionally appeared as an
island also on Japanese maps. One such wood block printed example in oval
shape is presently displayed at
http://en.zisska.de/no-1635-kawabe-s-und-g-hori/21635. Another feature is
Australia connected to the southern land mass. The map is part of a 2 vols.
encyclopaedia by a certain Kawabe Soyo, first published in 1831 and later
complemented by Hori Soyo, newly compiled for this edition of 1849. It
contains also panoramic views of Kyoto, Edo (now Tokyo) and Oska, as well as
plans of these cities, but the fact that a western model for the world map
was available to the compilers well before the forced opening of the country
through the Perry expedition is remarkable. I wonder whether any reader of
the list could help to identify that model.

If you have difficulties to access the image via the direct link above go to
http://de.zisska.de/ click ENGLISH to get to http://en.zisska.de/about-us
and type 1635 into the search window. The larger picture does not yet open
by clicking the thumbnail, but you have to first click Show, and then the
thumbnail on the next page.

Best regards to all, Lutz
