Somehow, I can't seem to feel much sympathy for anyone whose interest in map
collecting, etc. is so crassly commercial!

Back five decades ago when I was new in the
field, a lot of people would walk in off the street and ask about “blue
chip maps,” maps they could buy now cheaply and resell later. They
usually also asked about books. When it was explained that not just age
and scarcity set prices, but condition and demand as well, they usually went
away and asked someone else. With books, often when an auction record or
an asked price by a dealer was found, they seemed disappointed as it wasn’t
what they had hoped it would be for a book they had. The saddest of the
lot were those who had a run of NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC and wanted to know its
worth.
