A listserv does the same thing. It is called my InBox and I don't
have to go somewhere else to read it.

Also, even when I am home and not subject to the expense of an
Internet connection, it is very time consuming to search a forum
for new posts. It is much more efficient to have new posts sent to
me automatically.
In the forum you have an option to list all the new posts since your
last visit. Much easier than a listserv.
