Many thanks to all who responded, but Bill Wemple was the man with all the answers - many many thanks to you!
below - for those of you that may have had similar problems is his answer: Simple - yet I had overlooked it.
Your Canon printer may not support 24-bit true color images being passed to
it. Grid thematics are created with 24-bit color turned on and handed off
to printers as this type of raster.
By default in MapInfo 5.5, this is always on, but you can turn it off in
Display and printing by setting a registry key.
In Windows 95/NT/98
To change your display and printing of grids to 8 bit color
1. Select Start > Run and type in "regedit" and select OK.
2. Select HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > SOFTWARE > MapInfo > MapInfo > Common
3.Select Edit > New > DWORD
4. Name it UseTrueColor
5. Right click on "UseTrueColor" and select "Modify"
6. Enter 0 in the data value box - this will force MapInfo to turn true
color display off.
(1 to display true color, 1 to display 8 bit color)
7. Base can be either Hexadecimal or Decimal. Select OK and close the
registry.
8. Now when you restart MapInfo and print this grid, it should be handled
by your printer correctly.
9. If you want to turn this back on, just change the same key value above
to a one and restart MI Pro.
