Listers,

Anyone working with geology maps will understand the necessity of having the
geologic units placed in the correct stratigraphic order in the legend. MI
will not do this for you automatically, but there's a fairly simple
workaround. Many thanks to all who responded with various ideas, and
especially to Mal Jones who forwarded a very complete set of instructions
he's created in Word. Rather than post an attachment to the list, I'll just
suggest you contact Mal directly to see if he's willing to pass on a copy:

Anyway, here's the simplest solution:

1. Add a new Integer field called Order to your table of geologic units.
2. Assign each geologic unit a number, starting with 0 or 1 for the youngest
unit.
3. From Map>Create Legend: Select the table in the Legend Frame; can usually
accept the defaults in the next window; in Step 3, edit the title, select
Styles from: Unique values in column, and specify column name “Order”.
4. Label the legend objects as desired - Mal's instructions had some good
ideas for this.

MI will now order the legend items in the correct stratigraphic (or
chronological) order.

There were some other suggestions about editing the workspace, but this
seemed more complicated and potentially dangerous. Editing workspace files
should NEVER be attempted without first making a copy of the workspace file,
particularly if you've invested a lot of time on a complicated layout.

As for my second question about how to get the MI to display a proper
scaled-circle legend, the short answer is it can't. The main problem is that
MI's scaled-symbol thematic mapping function provides only a crude
approximation of true scaled-symbol mapping. This is because MI scales the
symbols using font sizes, which are only available in a limited range of
rather large steps, rather than a continuous range of symbol sizes.

My workaround for this was to write an MB app that puts properly-scaled
buffers around the data points.

Cheers,
Tim
