Now that we can choose Cartesian or Spherical for measuring distances, we've noticed an anomaly - the Sperical distances measured using either the distance tool or by double-clicking a line seem correct when compared to other standards of measure (paper maps, other software) BUT when Cartesian is selected the distance/line length figures are all higher by varying amounts but as as much as 50% higher. There may be a good explanation for this, but in practical terms it feels like a bug. It's also embarrassing - I was going over some on-screen routing of a native canoe journey we undertook earlier this summer with the Tribal Chairman and we were getting these ridiculously long distances for each leg of the journey traveled, using a nautical chart as a backdrop. When I switched to Spherical (MAP/OPTIONS) the distances were suddenly as expected, but I believe the Chairman is now leery of the veracity of the GIS, which we've spent years building. In one short session the integrity of the GIS and my mapping program are suddenly in question by the person who makes the executive decision about whether the program continues or not. Software bugs that aren't fixed (this 'bug' was there in v5.5 also) can be more than just irritating.
