got some answers thanks to Jacques Paris (as ever), Bill Thoen and John
Levers. The answer proves to be reasonably simple. the coordinate precision
is 1 (American not English) billionth (2*10^9) the difference between bounds
limits in either direction i.e. (max x - min x)/ 2*10^9. For info on how to
find out that sort of stuff download the document INTPREC2.zip at the web
