Orig request:
Does anyone have any advice on putting together an animated time
series? i would like to present data on the spread og of an epidemic
across space and time.

Summary:

I received 15 responses with most stating basically the same
advice,"Making a map for each frame and constructing animated GIFs is
probably your best bet".

I had done this a few years ago and had just figured that there had to
be an easier way by now. I had to produce an animation of 82 time
periods and I only had 2 days to do it. I ended up doing just this and
using MapBasic to automate the creation of 82 tables and creation of 2
thematic maps. I could not figure out how to automate the layout
creation and export to gif so I justed grunted through this manually.

Thx for taking the time to email me. Below are other advice (links)
that may help facilitate this process:

We have developed internal functionality which will generate series of
Mapinfo maps based upon time and space changes in a database and which
then generates animated movie files (.avi) for traffic flows on roads
and similar applications.....if you have a budget for doing your
project, give me some more details and I can give you a quote.

There is a statistical visualization package called AVS (Advanced Visual

Systems at http://www.avs.com/) that at the time, did some of this with
some
really basic maps.
