The best way to block this is to set up a filter on your end. On my own mail reader, I set up a series of email filters that look at the To and Cc fields and dump mail in the appropriate folders I've set up for mailing list mail. The first filter checks for a variety of taboo words like "viagra", "money for nothing", "chicks for free", etc. in the message subject line and immediately throws those messages in a SPAM folder. The next few filters scan the To and CC fields for addresses like "MapInfo-L", "GISlist" etc., and if found, it moves those messages to separate folders. The last filter checks to see if "bthoen" is in the To or Cc fields, and if it isn't, that message gets filed under SPAM. Then I just glance at the contents of the SPAM folder and if nothing looks interesting, the whole mess goes in the garbage. This is a suprisingly successful way to screen out spam. Of course, some slips through now and again, and sometimes when friends send me stuff that triggers a spam filter, I miss that too, but I can always glance at the SPAM folder before tossing it to catch those. The reason we don't limit posting of mail to subscribers only is that a LOT of people read MI-L mail from other sources and occasionally want to post a message without having to subscribe. We do block certain addresses that become pests, and I always throw out anyone who leaves an "out-of-office" robot on and aimed at MI-L mail, but outside of that, we want to give everyone as much freedom as possible. And BTW, that dope deal message didn't slip past my spam detectors. I found it sitting in my SPAM folder, not in my MapInfo-L folder, so the system worked! -- - Bill Thoen ------------------------------------------------------------ GISnet, 1401 Walnut St., Suite C, Boulder, CO 80302 tel: 303-786-9961, fax: 303-443-4856 mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED], http://www.gisnet.com ------------------------------------------------------------ _______________________________________________________________________ List hosting provided by Directions Magazine | www.directionsmag.com | To unsubscribe, send e-mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] and put "unsubscribe MapInfo-L" in the message body.
