I've just published some density estimation code, available as an mbx, on the directions web site (http://www.directionsmag.com/). To find it, go to tools and search for the word "density".
Its not super fast, but illustrates the techniques nicely. We've developed it to help visualise infectious disease point patterns. Hope it proves useful to some people.
