Mark,

create a table for your point objects with a text (character) column, put
the desired text into this column, then use it to label your points. Then
you can then set the point style to 'none' (the top left symbol in the chose
symbol dialog, probably represented by an 'N') and the labels will display
without any points.

I am trying to insert Text into a point object, but without 
any success. all i want to do is display a number instead 
of a symbol. Can anyone tell me what i should be doing to 
achieve this.
