Make the layer you want to clip editable, select it, right click and select "Edit Objects" and then "Set Target." Then select the layer you want to clip the other layer against, right click, and select "Erase Outside." (I think Erase Outside is the command you want to use based on my impression from your email - there may be another command that is better.)
