I'm sure that you are aware that MapInfo 6.5 not has been certified for
WinXP ! But I'm also using MapInfo 6.5 as well as MapInfo 5.5 on WinXP, so
they tend to work anyway, even though there might be some trouble around the
corner.

I'm not sure what the reason for this could be but you could try the
following to solve your problem:

-------------------------
Change some of the Preferences in MapInfo to force MapInfo to resave the
preference file. Maybe this might solve your problem.

------------------------
- Open the MapBasic window and enter the following command followed by
ENTER.: Print LocateFile$(0)
- You should now see a path in your message window pointing at the location
of the MapInfow.prf file. Check that the file actually is found there.

------------------------
- Search your c-drive for MapInfow.prf. Do you any at all ? If not try
copying this file from another computer to your MapInfo program directory.

Subject: MI-L Mapinfo startup

Dear All

I'm using MI 6.5 on a WIN XP. When I start Mapinfo a dialogie box
appears
with the fallowing message: Unable to read Preference file, using
internal
defaults.

We have XP since Summer this year and I never had this dialogue box
while
starting Mapinfo. Could someone out there tell me what this meassage
means?

With kind regards
