Robert We're having some of the same heartache here - the only (minor) consolation being that its pretty much the same for all software these days. The MapBasic user guide gives you the names and normal locations of files to support a roaming profile setup, plus MapBasic statements to find them.
I don't know which option we'll come up with but there are two obvious ones to look at - 1. Use the login script to check whether the c:\winnt\<user name>\application data\Mapinfo etc files exist on the PC and copy them in from a shared network resource if necessary. If you're clever you could get the .PRF file so that the user gets the same session setup wherever they log in. Its all about 0.25 MB in total. As FAR AS I CAN TELL this is all the windows installer does when setting up a new user on a PC ie uncompresses the files into the users profile. We're hoping its that simple but I'm willing to bet theres a registry setting involved. 2. Give users admin rights (temporary??) over their own c:\winnt\<user name> directory - if you can do this - so that the MapInfo user is installed correctly on first run on that PC. Would love to hear from a proper grown-up system administrator on this. I know that this is an issue about installing the user profile, but am unsure how to fix it. Basically their network is set up with roaming rpofiles, and so that users cannot install software. An administrator has to install MapInfo 7.0 on the machine, and then when the user starts MapInfo, it attempts to install a new user, but fails because it can't find a mapped drive. >From then on, it asks them to locate the font, pen and colour files whenever they want to start Mapinfo. Some odd behaviour is also noted when displaying layers using these fonts etc, although this is not consistent. Basically they persist with the annoying errors. Is there a document on what files need to go where so that I can work out what has failed and what permissions are needed to successfully install mapinfo for a new user? On my installation, these files are in my personal settings folder under mapinfo, but am unsure where they have theirs set to. I suspect the equivalent directory that this pointed to when mapinfo was installed by the administrator was not available to the end users when it was their turn. Is this influenced by the temp variable that the manual talks about needing to be set? Is there a way of running the user installation again to see if it will the second time, or is there a trigger to make this happen automatically, eg. delete a file or diectory? Any strategies to overcome this problem? I am a long way from them, so can't easily look at their configuration, but if I knew what to look for it may be easier. TIA Rob.
