Thanks Miguel, I had been hoping that there would be some way of achieving
this without replacing all the arrows manually (there are several
thousand...) with symbols or vector objects.  Apparently not, unless anyone
can tell me otherwise?

Check Jacques Paris' Web site http://www.paris-pc-gis.com/ppcc/gisprogs.htm
(file name fleche01.zip) for a collection of arrows.  You could also search
the Free Tools section of Directions Magazine for "arrows"; might find
something there too.
