That is true but it is a very limited import you can't manipulate anything
on it's way in. You may want to look into how AutoCad Map does that import.
It uses FMEobjects. They have relicensed the drivers and it distributes with
AutoCad Map. That functionality is not native to map. It was a plugin added
later that now distributes with Map. Go into your Program Files\Common
Files\Autodesk Shared\GIS and browse around for a while you will see what I
mean. Mapinfo is the same for it's ability to import shape files and such.
They also are using FMEobjects. If you want more functionality than those
standard imports IE the ability to configure and manipulate data on it's way
over you will need FME.

A MapInfo table can be exported as MID/MIF and MID/MIF can be imported by
AutoCad Map.
The alphanumeric data can be imported as object data in the same operation.
Object data is the basic technology in AutoCad Map for data.

DXF is absolutely a workaround to prevent.

All necessary functionality is within MapInfo and AutoCad Map.

There is a way to do get MapInfo attribute information over to Autocad
via Extended Entity Data, and from there I believe there are scripts
around in Autocad that will turn EED into the Object Data that Autodesk
Map can use.
People have definitely done this with our FME product combined with some
kind of post process in Autodesk Map.
