Thanks to Peter and Mikael Lund - the trace feature had indeed been enabled.  Turned 
it off and now all is well!

Make sure that you haven't enabled the trace feature on the ODBC Administrator dialog. 
This can give the mentioned results, because every ODBC activity is logged to a file.
