Mark, Maybe make the Cosmetic layer editable, select your multiple polygons, and do a CNTL-C folllowed by CNTL-V (cut and paste). Then choose Objects > Combine to combine all polygons in the Cosmetic layer. Then use this "merged polygon" for your clip region.
