I have no explanation - but, a few questions, comments:

1. Which (send) emailer causes the corruption?
(Header info shows that your emailer is Microsoft Outlook, Build
10.0.6626 - in Outlook, you can check header info of incoming mail to see
what emailer they're using)

2. Is just the .MAP file's filename (ie, not its content) that gets
corrupted when you save the attachment to disk?

3. You say "(the attached .MAP file sent to you) gets changed to odd
characters and a DAT extension". Can you show a (small) gif file of the
filename?
The .DAT extension seems most weird, but there can be some oddities from
UUEncoding of attachments (I have it set OFF), and also related to encoding
for outgoing messages (Western European (ISO) is what I use).
I have attached a couple of images (I'm not sure if they will survive the
DirectionsMag list service, however).

Finally, some organizations have some weird and very badly-behaved anti-spam
and anti-virus filters these days, which can wreak havoc.

Your solution (ZIP everything) seems best.

I have sent this as plain text with attachments -
