The problem might be that
your MapInfo Proviewer hasn't the ODBC support installed.
Uour could try copying
the MIDLODBC.dll from your MapInfo 8.0 programfolder to a MapInfo Proview 8.0
programfolder

Does anyone have experience connecting to a SQL 7 database via mapinfo
proviewer 8?
More specifically I have a MapInfo Professional 8.0 workspace that I would
like to distribute to some of my collegues. I have done this task
simply before, but the difference this time is the database I am connecting to
lives in SQL server 7 and not microsoft access.
If I open the workspace (the one that lives in SQL server 7) in
MapInfo Professional it asks for a login and a password (chosen mapinfo,
mapinfo) and all works fine. But when i try to open the same
workspace with proviewer 8 I do not get this login dialogue, I simply get an
error message stating I can not open the workspace.
Does anyone have any clues how to overcome such an issue?
