Size of file
- clip function is a big factor on the resulting file size, don't use this if
you can...
- Do you use Acrobat to make your PDF? This application has many options that
change the quality of the output and file size. Basically, it has different
algorithm use to compress the elements of the file. The Patterns are really
bitmaps. Try to use as less pattern as possible and tweak the compression
ration from the parameters. Also, depending on how you set the options, some
algorithms can be more efficient to compress the file with a higher resolution.
Yes- a 1500 DPI pdf "could" be a lot smaller then one made at 200 dpi!!!
(considering the 28000 points per axe for Mapinfo 8 and earlier) To give an
example, I made a letter size of downtown Monteal with street, labels, metro,
buildings, land use, etc. I choose the worst options I could find in the
settings of Acrobat and made a file over a hundred Megabyte for an output of
8.5 X 11 inches. Then I use the same workspace but with a page size of 48X72
inches with more resolution and set the parameters properly, the file was !
about 700kb!!! Which mean that if we extrapolate the coverage and file size,
one pdf was easily over a thousand time more efficient then the other... OK! I
have to admit that we send some employees directly to Adobe to know how to
really "tweak the software" and I won't go in explaining a full day course
here...
- if you use an other software for pdf, well, up to you to find if they are
ways to make it with smaller file size.

For coverage, Make a layout size of page according to your printers possibility
(or find one "supersize" at a printing place)but set it to have an X by Z
number of pages so it will cover the size you are looking for. Put you windows
and size it to your liking. If you want to clip part of it, first select the
window in the layout and then select the icon to change polygon colors, you can
remove the borders or choose background. Then create on top regions
(polygons)to hide section you are not interested by choosing no border and
white background.

And add the rest of whatever you want like legends and other stuff on top...

I made output about 9 ft X 9 this way...

Hope this help

Subject: [MI-L] Tips for printing large map regions to PDF

Hello list,

I have a task that is likely easy but I haven’t done something like this
before. I am normally just manipulating map layers within MapInfo Pro desktop.
I have been tasked with taking the edits to a county and outputting them to a
large (4ftx4ft) PDF. The final product is not one complete image of the
county. It is broken up into civil divisions. Thus far, I have tested
sectioning off each division (using Map → Set Clip Region) and saving the
window or saving the layout. Neither get the level of detail that I need (they
want to be able to see streets, etc). What is the best way to do this? Should
I use layout windows? What are the best settings to use to output the results
in a high-res? I have seen the finished product of something similar to this
(former employee) and the final file is usually 200-400 MB in PSD format.

Thanks for any and all advice!!
