It is just a couple of months shy of 5 years since I started using
MapInfo. Because the apparent direction of MI (toward web applications) is
not where we have needs, we've stopped upgrade spending with version 4.5 and
VM 2.0. Actually, they meet our needs for environmental data analyses and we
don't use almost all of the "improvements" found even in 4.5 (but the bug
fixes are quite nice.)

Anyway, we've moved most of our computing to the non-Redmond world
(specifically, Linux as an OS, WordPerfect for processed words, postgreSQL
for databases -- such as accounting, contact management and
scientific/spatial -- and GRASS for GIS work). Since I'll be out of town for
a few days on business, I decided that this is as good a time as any to say
goodbye to all you fine folks.

I've learned a lot from your answers to my questions and from reading your
solutions to others' problems. I hope that I've contributed some useful
insights from time to time. And I'll miss the Friday humor; they're almost
always choice selections.

So, I wish you all well with whatever paths you've chosen to follow. Our
next GIS project will be to incorporate spatial analyses into a fuzzy system
model of ecological risk assessment for pit lakes left from surface mines.
We've been asked to develop the model by the Bureau of Land Management down
in Nevada and it's proving to be a highly interesting task. We just hope
that in the not-too-distant future it will also produce business and profit.

May your systems never crash and your printed colors resemble those on the
monitor!
