To the best of my knowledge, current and recent versions of MapInfo Pro always save
map
windows at a resolution of 96dpi - often regarded as a "screen resolution". However,
for file
formats which store the notion of resolution (like TIFF), MI Pro doesn't seem to set
them correctly.
For formats which do not support resolution settings, your paint software will choose
a default, and
this can be different from package to package. The important thing to remember is that
in printing
terminology, *resolution* relates to dot density and *size* relates to the height and
width of the
image. For most printing (desktop or creating films) the resolution is normally
changed anyway.
300dpi is what I set all my map artwork to before sending to a bureau for film
creation. One of the
reasons I like the TIFF format is that it stores size and resolution internally. If
you have any image
at 600x600 and the resolution is set to 300dpi, you know for sure that when you bring
it into
PageMaker (or whatever) it will be exactly 2 inches square.

So, my advice is to ignore what MapInfo seems to set. Get your size right (inches x
96) and set the
resolution after - if your image file format supports it.
