Hi

We are reasonably new users of MAP/INFO and have an interesting challenge.

We are required to output a tab delimited text file of a number of
attributes including area (in hectares) and unique geographic polygon number
for each unique polygon of the results of a spatial overlay that involve at
least two and sometimes more layers. While we have worked out the how to
generate the text file and put area in the attribute table (in hectares) we
are having difficulty in establishing how we spatially overlay two polygon
layers to give:

a third polygon layer in which:

1. the graphics are joined or merged to give a new set of polygons with
corresponding new areas and;

2. where the attributes from the two original tables are merged in the
corresponding third layer table.

We need then to provide a unique number for each new polygon and the area
before exporting the table.

The text table is being picked up by a modelling application

We also have a point layer of sample sites which we need to associate with
each of the unique polygons developed above and provide the point number ( a
key to other attributes in a different database) and the polygon number as a
text file for the modelling system to use as a cross reference between the
sites and the polygons.

We have seen it done in another GIS and have grappled to do it in Map/Info.
We understand that it can be done.. we just need some guidance as to how we
get there.

On a different note ... is there an "uncombine" routine which allows one to
uncombine polygons which have been combined???

Thanks to anyone who can help here

Regards

Leo
