Look for references to DEBUG in the SConstruct file. Chances are that it
is the compile flags which make the difference. With Debug=True many
optimisations are disabled to make the code easier to follow in the
debugger.
If you're running on Linux then I'd suggest trying to run the code with
valgrind. This tends to be able to spot many subtle coding errors like
accessing memory after a free.
