There is now a simple demo in

Marcin, would you mind describing a bit more which exact parameters
you used for your nice Poland maps?
Is your preparation step anything like the one in
http://mapnik-utils.googlecode.com/svn/sandbox/hillshading/get_srtm_data.sh
(which I initally got from
http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/HikingBikingMaps, same source that
you mentioned).
For the forests and other area features, which alpha value do you use?
The colors are a bit more saturated for compensation I suppose?
Do you do any height exaggeration?
