They are now since Artem committed them in http://trac.mapnik.org/changeset/1027, so they will be in Mapnik 0.6.0, great. Is your preparation step anything like the one in http://mapnik-utils.googlecode.com/svn/sandbox/hillshading/get_srtm_data.sh (which I initally got from http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/HikingBikingMaps, same source that you mentioned). For the forests and other area features, which alpha value do you use? The colors are a bit more saturated for compensation I suppose? Do you do any height exaggeration?
