Hello Again: Thank you for the suggestion, Ivan. I actually did consider mod tile at one point but for some reason, I ruled it out. Also, I wanted to mention that in the past, I rendered tiles using generate_tiles.py within http://svn.openstreetmap.org/applications/rendering/mapnik. For my purpose, it worked really well. My purpose is to render a fairly small city area (Northeast Ohio--Cleveland). A tutorial that I recommend is at http://weait.com/content/make-your-first-map. Within a few days, I was up and running with Ubuntu and rendering tiles. Now that I am rendering custom data, (i.e. not OSM) I am finding that coordinating all of the data, projections, and the xml file is pretty difficult -- whereas with OSM all that stuff is 'out of the box'
As an aside, I would also like to say that the 64 bit build is still working and I have no problems at all to report.
