Chris and Philip. Yes we are aware of the missing demo folders and
will make sure to remember to bundle them in the next release. Sorry
about that.
In the meantime feel to edit the wiki to point out to how to find the
files - for example by downloading the Mapnik source files. (I would
do this myself but am traveling currently).
Chris, regarding missing shapefiles for a tutorial - can you point out
the exact spot you noticed so I can fix?

I just noticed that the folder 'demo', mentioned in the helpful
Windows installation notes here:
http://trac.mapnik.org/wiki/WindowsInstallation appears to be
missing.
It IS present in 0.6.0 and the linux packages for 0.6.1.
Not a big deal but a tad confusing for beginners slavishly following
the instructions!
