Dane, Thanks for your great feedback. After some digging, I was able to install the latest Xcode for Mac OS 10.4 (Xcode 2.5). Afterwards, I ran into a similar error, but it gave huge debug info this time. I posted a ticket as suggested with details at: https://trac.macports.org/ticket/23107 .
The next step I may take right away is installing from source (oh boy). I'll follow up if questions arise.
