What does this query give in pgAdmin:
Select ST_Extent(the_geom) from cookcoroads;
My guess is that your extent is not correct. It must be in the
coordinates of the spatial reference system.
Another thing to try is to remove the hardcoded 'extent' parameter,
and let Mapnik dynamically fetch the extent.

display layers so I can query for subsets of data when needed. I can
import this shapefile into postGIS, and when I query it in pgAdmin
