Hi all,
With the deadline for student proposals approaching, I'd like to put in my candidacy for implementing the idea I put on the trac regarding the php binding for mapnik. I put multiple ideas there but given the number of excellent other proposals, I figured it's best that I restrict myself to the one I feel most excited about, which is the php extension. As I described, I think a php binding would be of great benefit to mapnik, to get it more widely used. I realize it's more broadening mapnik's scope rather than deepening the core mapnik functionality like some of the other proposed GSoC projects are, but I don't think that detracts from its potential. The first thing I would focus on is extending the functionality to cover the whole range of mapnik functionality, and making it compatible with mapnik2, also. A production quality binding needs a full-coverage test suite and it needs a build toolchain that integrates with the way other php extensions are build. A short profile of myself is also in order I think; I'm not the traditional university student (but I do qualify under the GSoC rules :) ). I'm part time law student at the university of Maastricht in the Netherlands, I'm part time dad and part time progammer. I've been programming professionally since I graduated with an applied informatics degree in 2000, mostly in C++; but I've written a lot of php code too. In my current job I work with geodata a lot and I've written several map rendering implementations over the years (although with different objectives than mapnik). regards, Roel _______________________________________________ Mapnik-users mailing list [email protected] https://lists.berlios.de/mailman/listinfo/mapnik-users
