So I changed the prefix to: "planet_osm"  after trying usa combinations and now 
have this:

[root@ mapnik]# ./generate_image.py                                             
                                                                                
                                         
proj_init_error:failed to initialize projection with:+init=epsg:4326

Thoughts?
