First of all, apologies to recent posters of questions - I've wished to respond to many questions but have been limited on time in the last several weeks.
Here's why: The Mapnik development team has been actively working on sprinting to release Mapnik2. We are shooting for this week, so stay tuned for news on the mapnik.org site and follow along as the milestone is wrapped up at http://trac.mapnik.org/milestone/Mapnik%202.0. GSOC has wrapped up and many of us involved in Mapnik development have been wrapping up loose ends with the amazing projects that took place this year. Make sure to check out the two final posts on these projects at: http://mapnik.org/news/2011/sep/07/carto_parser_wrapup/ and http://mapnik.org/news/2011/sep/02/text_formating/ We have been also been pushing on parallel milestone on performance improvements (http://trac.mapnik.org/milestone/Performance%20Optimizations). Some of these features will land in Mapnik 2.x and others will land in Mapnik 3.x. This is driven by the friendly annual competition at the FOSS4G which benchmarks the speed of dynamic rendering of various servers, Mapnik being one of them. Also follow the mapnik.org news feed for updates on this competition - the results will be announced the last day of Foss4g: http://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/Benchmarking_2010 and I'll try to do a post at mapnik.org detailing what we've learned along the way. Also, if anyone is attending FOSS4G feel free to shoot a note to this mailing list or tweet to the @mapnikproject so we can meet up!
