Is the example you have built from using shapefiles from another source rather than OSM data?
I would still say go for something as simple as you can possibly get it, then build back up once you have it working. Alternatively, follow the mapnik rendering instructions on the OSM wiki, which will give you a very complicated style that will plot all sorts of data. Regards Graham. -- Graham Jones Hartlepool, UK.
