William's Cairo framework will not work because he does not provide cairomm or 
libsigc++ (which provide the c++ binding to Cairo) and because he does not 
provide a pkgconfig file (which is why your configure check is not working). 

I recommend homebrew or macports for Cairo if you really need that support.
